But this assumption of no net benefit to the rights holder does not hold true in a digital world. In a digital/networked world, funny things like network externalities, open standards, non-rivalrous consumption (your use of a resource doesn’t exclude mine) and strong complementarity begin to happen.

Wundervolle Zeiten
Zwei interessante Postings zum Kapital, das StartUps heutzutage erfordern: Bnoopy (Joe Kraus, ehemals Excite, jetzt JotSpot) rechnet vor, wie top-notch (Web-)Anwendungen derzeit für ein Dreißigstel im Vergleich zu vor 10 Jahren (100.000 : 3.000.000 $) zu realisieren sind. Lesen, Business Plan schreiben und dem nächsten VC in die Hand drücken.
Die derzeitigen scheinenden Sterne am Webanwendungshimmel 37signals gehen dann noch einen Schritt weiter:
Now that all the fixed costs are gone, you’re left with the requirements of time and passion. While those resources (or at least one of them) can be bought by setting up shop and saying “we’re doing it”, they can certainly also be had outside the typical startup atmosphere. And I think that story is actually a lot more interesting since its not just lowering the costs of an existing model, it’s throwing it out and opting for a new one entirely.
As mini-investments from VCs and angels become the next big thing, I hope more crews will think hard and consider whether they could do without. Look at the project that costs $100,000 and figure out how to make it cost $20,000 over the shoulders of three guys. Do it out of your own pocket and you’ll be forced to reckon with constraints earlier and more intensely.

Guter Einführungsartikel in die Ökonomie der Emails von Merlin Mann in Macworld: The Inbox Makeover. Jede Email beansprucht Zeit und Aufmerksamkeit. Der Trick dabei ist, jeder soviel wie nötig und so wenig wie möglich zukommen zu lassen, und das funktioniert am besten durch Vereinfachung (nur 6 Verzeichnisse plus Trash) und Entschlackung (keine überquellende Inbox)

Aus den tiefen der Blogarchive irgendwie wieder durch Simpy heraufgespült: A Crash Course On Complexity, Emergence and Collective Intelligence – eine gute Linkliste zu kollektiver Intelligenz, Schwärmen und Ameisenhaufen.
Procrastination
Wer seine Aktivitäten zumindest teilweise nach Next Actions organisiert, der wird das sicherlich kennen: es gibt einige, die sich hartnäckig der Ausführung bzw. Abhakung widersetzen. Mitunter können bekannte oder unbekannte Ängste die Gründe dafür sein.
Der secretGeek hat dafür eine ganz einleuchtende Methodik entwickelt, nachzulesen auf seinem Blog. In einer Nußschale: auf einem Blatt links die Aufgabe und rechts frei assoziativ die Ängste, Blockaden, Hinderungsgründe notieren und rekursiv verkleinern und herunterbrechen.

Murakami 4/11
Die New York Times hatte vor kurzem ein kleines Feature über Haruki Murakami, interessant ist vor allem sein Lebens- bzw. Schreibstil:
He wrote “Kafka [on the Shore]” in six months, starting, as he usually does, without a plan. He spent one year revising it. He follows a strict regimen. Going to bed around 9 p.m. – he never dreams, he said – he wakes up without an alarm clock around 4 a.m. He immediately turns on his Macintosh and writes until 11 a.m., producing every day 4,000 characters, or the equivalent of two to three pages in English.

“I write the same amount every day without any day off,” he said. “I absolutely never look back and go forward. I hear Hemingway was like that.”

Unlike Hemingway, Mr. Murakami leads a healthy lifestyle. In the afternoons, to build up his stamina to keep writing, he works out for one or two hours.
