Open-Ended
What if all content is on a continuum? What if there’s no end? What if there’s no finality anymore?
That’s a huge change from what most of us are used to. From early on, we’re trained to create editions: an essay, a book, a magazine, a newspaper, a movie, a game, etc. Those are projects with defined beginnings and endings.
But digital content doesn’t really exist in an edition-based world. It moves, it flows. It gets chunked up, mashed up, and recombined. It can be copied and pasted at will (whether you like it or not). It can be added to. It can be deleted from. It hibernates and reappears unexpectedly months or years later.

Imagine a filter that designated as nonsense all spam, ambiguity, irony, hyperbole, sarcasm, metaphor, metonymy, and punning. The sense we’d be left with would be expression of direct literal representation. This is unequivocally represents that. Google’s search algorithm has benefitted from the fact that, generally speaking, people don’t ironically hyperlink. But as the language of the Network becomes more real-time, more a medium through which people converse— the full range of language will come into play.

People have been talking about recreating Twitter as a set of standards and protocols pretty much since we launched and started getting popular. In fact these standards and protocols exist and Twitter is so open that people can just make Twitter work with a more open and federated network.
So far that hasn’t taken off, I believe because it hasn’t provided as good a user experience. I think there are advantages to a decentralized system and there are also many disadvantages. The disadvantage is that it’s very hard to innovate and do some of the things you can do with a centralized service with a decentralized service, that’s just part of the trade-off and so far it doesn’t seem like a worthwhile trade-off.

Demoskopie
In Konflikten wie dem um Stuttgart 21 zeigt sich eine Krise des repräsentativ-demokratischen Systems. Es geht nicht darum, ob die Demonstrierenden Recht haben oder sie wenigstens eine gesellschaftliche Mehrheit abbilden – es ist denkbar, dass tatsächlich nur eine wortmächtige Minderheit demonstriert. Es geht darum, dass es in einer pluralen, zunehmend differenzierteren Gesellschaft nicht genügt, die reichlich binäre Entscheidung zwischen einer Handvoll Parteien alle paar Jahre als hinreichende Legitimierung für alles politische Handeln dazwischen anzusehen und jeden Verweis auf Stimmungen in der Gesellschaft mit dem Mantra »Demokratie, nicht Demoskopie« einfach abzutun.
